Key findings from a recent grains farm biosecurity survey

25 Feb 2025

A new survey commissioned by the Grains Farm Biosecurity Program (GFBP), has found that 86% of grains producers across the country prefer seek advice and pest identification from local agronomists.

The GFBP is an initiative to improve the management of, and preparedness for, biosecurity risks in the grains industry at the farm and industry levels. Launched in 2007, the program is managed by Plant Health Australia (PHA) and funded by growers through Grain Producers Australia (GPA) in collaboration with the New South Wales, Queensland, South Australian, Victorian and Western Australian governments.

The second most preferred source was information from state and territory government departments (18%), and the producers’ own experience and knowledge (15%) in third place. This strong reliance on knowledgeable, scientific resources presents a valuable opportunity for growers.

The GFBP encourages producers to expand their network of expertise while maintaining their trusted methods. By diversifying the advice they receive, growers can more effectively prevent the spread of pests and diseases.

Grains Biosecurity Officers

Grains biosecurity officers (GBOs) are government employees who work closely with growers and rest of the grains supply chain. GBO’s operate in each of the grain growing regions of New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia. GBOs play an essential role in raising awareness of the industry’s main exotic pest threats. They work with industry to improve farm hygiene practices that minimise the risk of disease and pest entry and spread on farms. They are readily available to advise on pest identification, prevention measures, and the steps to take if a serious incursion is detected.

The latest GFBP survey found that only 32% of producers were aware of GBOs. Read more about GBOs here.

Third-party organisations

Biosecurity not-for-profits, scientific corporations, universities, and other academic institutions all have useful information about pests, diseases, and the most up-to-date biosecurity practices available. Plant Health Australia (PHA), which administers the GFBP, is one example. PHA provides key resources, including factsheets on common grain pests and biosecurity training courses. Explore these resources here.

The GFBP website also offers a suite of resources including technical guides, best practice manuals, up-to-date research findings, and interactive tools. These resources are designed to empower industry professionals with the knowledge and strategies needed to keep crops safe from pests and diseases.

Grains Research & Development Corporation

The Grains Research & Development Corporation (GRDC) is a government-owned corporation dedicated to planning, investing in, and overseeing all grains-related research and development. It collaborates with industry, government, and third-party organisations to provide valuable research and information for grains producers. Explore their website here.

Accessing multiple channels of advice and resources benefit grains producers. Ultimately everyone shares the same goal— protecting Australian crops and the agriculture industry from pests and diseases.
