Australia’s grain markets have strict quality standards, requiring grain that is free of live insects. Improperly managed stored grain can become infested with pests, and a single tonne of infested grain can yield over a million insects in just one year. These pests can easily spread to other grain storages, leading to widespread infestations. That’s why effective on-farm storage practices are more critical than ever.
In a recent initiative, the Grains Farm Biosecurity Program partnered with H.E. Silos to distribute information kits to silo purchasers. NSW Grains Biosecurity Officer, Kate Glastonbury, met with H.E. Silos’ Office Manager, Larna Seach, in Gunnedah to deliver 200 copies of Monitoring Stored Grain and farm biosecurity flyers. These resources provide essential guidance on insect monitoring, record-keeping, storage hygiene, and the steps to develop a farm biosecurity plan.
With H.E. Silos’ nationwide reach, this important biosecurity information will be available to farmers across Australia, supporting efforts to safeguard stored grains against pests.
