New industry liaison to support grains biosecurity

23 Jun 2026

Ruth Thompson has been appointed the Industry Liaison for Grains Biosecurity, a Plant Health Australia (PHA) role supporting engagement and preparedness across the grains sector.

In this role, Ruth will work with growers, industry organisations and government stakeholders to support practical biosecurity initiatives and strengthen connections across the grains industry.

Raised on a mixed farming operation in Central West New South Wales and now based on the Darling Downs in Queensland, Ruth has a strong understanding of grain production systems and the day-to-day realities faced by growers.

Ruth has worked across agronomy, extension, retail, project management and industry representation. Most recently, she served as Grains Policy Director with AgForce Queensland, where she led policy development and advocacy on issues affecting the grains industry.

Stuart Kearns, National Manager Preparedness and RD&E at PHA, said Ruth’s appointment would strengthen engagement between PHA and the grains industry.

“Ruth brings a highly valuable combination of practical on-farm experience and deep industry networks. Her ability to connect policy, technical knowledge and grower priorities will be a real asset to the Grains Farm Biosecurity Program and our broader engagement with industry,” Mr Kearns said.

Ruth will support delivery of grains biosecurity initiatives and work with grain producers, industry organisations and government stakeholders to strengthen biosecurity preparedness across the sector.

“I look forward to supporting the delivery of grains biosecurity initiatives and working with grain producers, industry organisations and government stakeholders to strengthen biosecurity preparedness across the sector,” Ruth said.
