Pigeon peas

Pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan syn. Cajanus indicus) is a short-lived summer-growing perennial pulse crop that is grown widely throughout the tropics and sub-tropical regions of the world. Pigeon peas in Australia are suitable for growing in northern New South Wales and Queensland. The grain is used for human consumption and is highly sought after in India, Africa and Southeast Asia. Currently the pigeon pea industry in Australia is small. Pigeon peas are increasingly being used as a Heliothis/ Helicoverpa trap crop for the cotton industry.
