New fact sheet on High Priority Pests for the grains industry

10 Jun 2026

Prepared by Jordan Scott, Grains Biosecurity Officer, South Australia

A new factsheet is now available outlining the exotic pests and diseases identified as high priority threats to Australia’s grains industry.

The High Priority Pests (HPP) list provides a summary of the most significant exotic threats to the Australian grain industry. Each pest was identified during the development of the recent Biosecurity Plan through a risk assessment based on four critical criteria: entry, establishment, spread potential, and economic impact.

This list helps industry and government prioritise and implement preparedness activities and focus attention on pests that could significantly affect grain production, market access and business continuity if introduced.

Understanding high priority pests supports early detection and reporting. Growers, advisers and industry representatives are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the current list and remain alert for anything unusual.

The HPP list will continue to evolve alongside our understanding of pest biology and new production methods.
