Sorghum

Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) is Australia’s fourth largest field crop (in terms of tonnes produced – after wheat, barley and canola) and is a major component of the dryland cropping system of north-eastern Australia, with almost all of Australia’s sorghum grown in either Queensland or in NSW.  Sorghum produced in Australia is used almost exclusively for stock feed, although there is an increasing export of sorghum to China for Baijiu (a sorghum based spirit). The majority of sorghum produced in Australia is consumed domestically due to high local demand. However, the export market is of increasing importance.
