Maize

More maize (Zea mays) is produced worldwide than any other grain crop and is one of the world most widely planted crops. It is a multipurpose summer grain and silage crop. Some varieties are also grown for use as a horticultural crop (sweet corn) and in confectionary (popcorn). The majority of the maize grown in Australia is produced in New South Wales and Queensland. Small amounts are also grown in Victoria, Western Australia and the Northern Territory. Maize is predominantly grown for the domestic market, although a small amount, usually of specialised varieties is grown for export.
